Four workers were killed and two others injured in an explosion on Sunday night at a ship-breaking yard in Baro Awlia area under Sitakunda upazila in Chittagong.
The deceased were identified as Nesar Uddin, 25, Yunus, 25, Gias Uddin, 25, and Mir Kashem, 22, while the injured were identified as Najir Ahmed, 35, and Golap Hossain, 27.
Habibur Rahman, officer-in-charge (investigation) of Sitakunda police station, said six workers of the Jiri Subeder Ship-breaking Yard sustained injuries in an explosion that took place during cutting a scrap vessel at about 6:00pm.
He said the injured were rushed to Chittagong Medical College Hospital.
The doctors on duty at
the CMCH declared one of the injured, Nesar, dead on arrival, hospital sources said.
Of the rest of the wounded, Yunus, Gias Uddin, and Mir Kashem succumbed to mtheir injuries later in the night, they added.
Earlier in August, four workers were killed in separate accidents at different ship-breaking yards, four in an explosion on January 18, and one worker on March 16.
Nine workers were killed in eight accidents at various ship-breaking yards at Sitakunda in a number of accidents in 2010 while 23 workers were killed in 14 accidents in 2009.
