Rapid Action Battalion - RAB

RAPID ACTION BATTALION FORCES was formally emerged on 26 March 2004. This force started its operational journey from 14 April 2004.

The capabilities of RAB forces are:

1. Internal security duties.                                                                                       
2. Recovery of unauthorized arms, ammunitions, explosives and such other articles.            
3. Apprehension of armed gangs of criminals.                                                          
4. Assisting other law enforcing agencies for maintaining law and order          
5. Intelligence gathering in respect of crimes and criminal activitices    
6. Investigation of any offence on the direction of the government.       
7. Such other duties as the government may, from time to time, assign.

Foreign Investment in Bangladesh

Private investment from overseas company or individual are welcomed in all sectors of the economy with the exception of only five sectors which are reserved for public sector. Such investments can be made either independently or through joint venture on mutually beneficial terms and conditions. In other words, 100% foreign direct investment as well as joint venture both with local private sponsor or with public sector is allowed.

Beximco: A story of success

Beximco is the country’s largest group With $834 million in revenue, 45,000 employees and a market capitalization of $1.7 billion on the Dhaka Stock Exchange. It was born when the country was in the midst of a bloody battle for independence from Pakistan. When Bangladesh appealed for international aid in 1971, Henry Kissinger, the US national security advisor to the Richard Nixon administration, then in power, famously dismissed the idea saying, “the place is, and will always be, a basket case.”

Dhaka hopes to get more Teesta waters

Bangladesh expects to share the Teesta waters on a 50-50 basis during the lean period. An interim agreement on sharing the river waters for 15 years is likely to be signed during the visit of the Indian Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh, on 6-7 September. The water resources minister, Ramesh Chandra Sen, said this on Friday. The Indian water resources minister, Pawan Bansal, will reach Dhaka on September 6 to attend the Joint River Commission (JRC) meeting to be held on the same day.

Legal and judicial system of Bangladesh owes its origin mainly to two hundred years British rule in the Indian Sub-Continent although some elements of it are remnants of Pre-British period tracing back to Hindu and Muslim administration. It passed through various stages and has been gradually developed as a continuous historical process. The process of evolution has been partly indigenous and partly foreign and the legal system of the present day emanates from a mixed system which has structure, legal principles and concepts modeled on both Indo-Mughal and English law.

Climate of Bangladesh

Bangladesh has a tropical monsoon type climate with a hot & rainy summer and a dry winter. January is the coolest month with temperatures averaging near 26 deg C (78 d F) and April the warmest with temperatures from 33 to 36 deg C (91 to 96 deg F).  Most places of Bangladesh receive more than 1,525 mm of rain a year, and areas near the hills receive 5,080 mm ). Most rains occur during the monsoon (June-September) and little in winter (November-February).

About Bangladesh Army

The Bangladesh Army (Bangladesh Shena Bahini) is the land forces branch of the Military of Bangladesh. It was formed on 15 April 1971 following the oath of the Bangladesh Government at Meherpur, Kushtia during Bangladesh Liberation War under which the Bangladesh Forces originally consisting of Bengali soldiers and officers who defected from the Pakistan Army pledged their alliegence to Bangladesh. Its current strength is estimated to be over 150,000 personnel with 75,000 retired reserve personnel. There are also a large number of civilian workers.

The Bangladesh Navy originally under Bangladesh Forces was created during the Bangladesh War of Independence in 1971 against Pakistan. Its official creation was established in July 1971 during the historic Bangladesh Sector Commanders Conference 1971. In 1971, with West Pakistan imposing a military rule in East Pakistan, the Bangladesh War of Independence also known as Bangladesh Liberation War was truly underway.
